That's Life In The Big City!
Fox just called to cancel because they ran another topless-professor-in-trouble-with-her-university story today. Who is this woman horning in on my territory? Guess there's a whole slew of us hussies. Anyway, to be clear, I am not in trouble with my university, to its credit. And as far as I know, I am still on for the Rita Cosby show tomorrow night--unless the other naked lady hustles me out of that one too!
Gosh, however will I spend this free time in New York City?
Update: So here's the sad story of the woman featured on Fox today who is apparently going to be fired because of her topless photos. She's not actually a university professor, it turns out, but a high school teacher. Thanks to Artie Bigley for sending along this link to the Topfree Equal Rights Association.

Look forward to seeing you on Rita

You are a goddess! Slay those blinded conformists with a dose of your authentic, didactic, inspired wizardry. Thank goodness for scandal. Perhaps the suppossed vices of the world can make way for sobriety and transformation at the universal level. For what you do and who you are, I have the utmost respect!

I think you have to dig deeper into the story to find out why this later story is involving a "firing." The photographer and the subject were lesbian lovers and the subject wrote on her chest with a marker "f*ck me"...seems to me there is a line between posing topless for art and material that is inappropriate for high school students to see.

Just caught you talking to one of my favorite women, Rita Cosby (you give good TV).
I know what you teach, but I gotta tell ya, you're a hot dame. Good on ya.
From one prof to another, don't let the bastards get ya down.

Alternate hussy was also pre-empted. At least when I checked in it was White House press conference about Supreme Court decision an Guantanamo. Finale was pretty funny, Bill Clinton (aka Steve Bridges) was interviewed.

OMG that was so fun!!!! And when I came out of the studio, Al Sharpton was sitting there. It was a pleasure to shake his hand. We firebrands need to stick together.

Dan

I caught your fifteen minutes on Rita Cosby's show and I think you handled yourself well. Capitalism has certainly warped our definition of beauty and our culture has burdened us with shame if our bodies vary from the idealized and airbrushed beauties depicted in advertising. I like what you're doing, I applaud what you've done. All in all, three photos shouldn't be that big a deal but it seems that some people find your breast to be a threat. I was struck that you thought you were in competition with pictures and paintings of topless women. No inanimate object in the world can compete with a real live woman. You win hands down.

I saw you on MSNBC last night and you were terrific. The only complaint I had was they didn't give you enough air time and gave too much to the radio talk show host.

I like how you couldn't defend yourself when the other lady mentioned your anti-man editorial.
So if I don't support what you tell me to, I'm supporting a rape culture? Isn't that a lot like "you're either with me or you're not?"
You're more facist then President Bush.

Dr. Blaine for President!

Well I am a Conservative and I think there is nothing wrong with what you are doing. Plus you being hot doesn't hurt either...

I am so tired of hearing about your boobs and how great you are by showing them on the internet. You're no different than a college girl showing naked pictures of herself on a webcam in a dormroom for attention.

Damn! I missed the show. I'm sure it is just the beginning of more exciting times in your career. You are a treasure & congrats!

Hi Dr. Blaine! I loved you on Rita Cosby's show last night - I hope I can soon become as poised and confident as you are. I recorded your segment to show my mom, she'll love it! Hope to see you around the Gender Studies office sometime.

Does penis size matter to you Doctor?

If you are voted in as President of these United States of America, will I loose my penis? Will you support a bill to cut off all male private parts?

It's such a shame... A shame that a strong voice for equality turns out to be so much less than she pretends to be.
"I wrote an anti-rape editorial for our school newspaper last Spring and it put me on the radar of some conservative bloggers, who very strenuously objected to my argument that we need to stop rape...."
With this one statement you have discredited yourself and the movement you have tried to support. You are a liar. You are intellectually dishonest. You are just another name on the long list of people that are so desperate to prove their point that they loose sight of why that point matters.

It is refreshing to see a woman content in her body. Your example is inspiring. I don't know if you read these comments, but if you do I'm interested in the "Rape Culture" cause. What could a college kid in the South do to help?

So when a gorgeous female shows her breasts it's perpetuating the patriarchy, but when you show your breasts it's naturalizing the female body? Say what?
What if Danny Devito took over Orlando Bloom's role in his next movie - would that be naturalizing the male body? What makes something naturalizing? Is it when you cringe?
Your arguments are riddled with logical fallacies. I'm really surprised you teach writing at USC.
Posted by: Harry | July 1, 2006 06:40 PM
Harry, the issue is who is controlling the images and for what purpose. It wouldn't matter if Devito replaced Bloom in a film--neither of them would be controlling the images because they are for commercial purposes.

Griff, I love that you asked how to be a part of the solution! I'll write a blog on this as soon as I get home from my lovely trip. Meanwhile, good for you. AS far as I can tell, the only thing we need to be ashamed of is not asking how we can make the world a kinder place!

Hey Diana!
It was nice to see your smiling face again! And your topless photo from burning man... which by the way, was my inspiration to run around in a bikini top at Coachella, despite my having fat on my stomach (OMG! no one has fat! *sarcastic sowhority stereotype*)
and, you know, i Actually read your editorial... and you simply pointed out the fallacies going on with frats "supporting" Take Back the Night and turning around and participating in a culture that allows the raping of our ladies of troy...
and as for you presenting logical fallacies in your MSNBC interview... sure... but is there anyone among us who is 100% consistent?

I just seen your interview and I thought you made so good arguements. I would like to read the paper that got the fire started. Hope your having a great weekend and Happy Independence Day!!

The hateful troll comments make me admire you even more, because I realize how difficult your job must be and the bravery it takes to stand up to the barrage of idiocy.
Posted by: Suebob | July 3, 2006 09:59 AM
David,
I just wanted to say that you make an important point. I was also disappointed when Dr. Blaine described her detractors as "pro-rape," thus perpetuating a stupid argument that has nothing to do with changing attitudes toward gender and more to do with perpetuating the stereotypes and prejudices that make people like her viable candidates for lecturships at prestiges universities.
Dissention in these ranks is often juvenile and offensive. "Your boobs are ugly," or whatever. Those are the "arguments" that get the most attention here because they're easy to respond to: "Yeah, well, you're stupid!"
You made a good point, so I don't expect anyone else to acknowledge it at all. But I heard ya, brother!
Word up,
TS

CRAP!!! I don't think we get that show up here. (alaska.)
Posted by: Lexie | July 12, 2006 07:15 PM
diana,
how do i decide if i want to shave my underarms or not? this is a very difficult decision.
my boyfriend says it doesnt matter, but clearly it does, since my shaving them would be an act of conformity to the patriarch and by not shaving them, i will call attention to myself as a non-conformist.
because of my dilemma, i'm forced to wear t-shirts every day. it has kept me from baring my breasts both on the internet and in public. what should i do? how do i decide?
how can i become as brave as you are?

It's not at all surprising to me that you don't think issues pertainting to women's health are truly important. We've been taught to loathe females and discount anything pertainting to us as inconsequential. But underarm shaving has a number of negative health effects, including possibly being responsible for the huge spike in breast cancer we've encountered since WWII. These things matter to me, as they should. I value my ability to think clearly and think for myself, and I value the feminist theorists who have taught me to do so.

DYB,
Could you please cite the medical report(s) connecting armpit shaving to breast cancer?
John
Posted by: john | July 14, 2006 11:21 AM
there are many things that could be linked to rises in breast cancer. shaving your pits is surely NOT one of them. what other health effects has it caused women?
