Oprah Here We Come!
My friend just called to say the Channel 4 news used me as a tease for their upcoming broadcast! Is this a slow news day or what? Apparently they're interested in the naked pictures, well topless pictures to be exact, posted to my flickr site. My husband and I rented a flat in London last Fall from one of our UCLA professors whose wife paints odalisques, those stylized nineteenth century nudes. They're hanging throughout the Bayswater apartment. One night as we got ready for bed, he and I were laughing about how much I look like them, and he took my picture in a similar pose in front of one of the paintings, which I then put up on my site as an intertextual homage to Ingres. The other photo is me at Burning Man, where I went specifically to confront and erase the body loathing that my culture foists on us women. I had an amazing time, which I wrote about here, and was happy to include a photo of me, arms up, celebrating life, along with all the other myriad photos I have, incuding those of friends, dad, dogs, mentors, lectures, rallies, parties, weddings, sporting events, travel, etc etc etc, the full panoply of my rich and meaningful life.
If this is true, and I guess it is, that anyone cares that some lady has her breasts on the internet--oops just saw the tease, hey I look great!--then it just goes to prove what I tell my students, that we don't really care about "news" in this culture nearly as much as sensation and sex. At least I am not on the news because I raped someone.
Of course it's my "enemies" who did this, because they just don't get it, and they want to hurt me, which they can't. Of course the university will defend academic freedom. In fact, I would like to thank those who have declared war on me for bringing me so much attention because I am writing a book on breast implants--why I won't get them in spite of cultural pressure to conform-- and I am looking for an agent, someone who wants to make a LOT of money backing a beautiful, articulate, brilliant, highly educated compassionate woman who has tons to say and has the power to change women's lives for the better. If you're that person, drop me a line. Today, Channel 4. Tomorrow, Total World Domination!

Well, it is a slow news day and USC did little to show support for you, just throw a copy of their "policy statement" and we'll get back to you.
You work at a Private University, this is a private website...don't know if you have to sign a "moral clause" as part of your employment, if not don't worry about it. USC has more problems with their football players raping and beating up people.....but with that said, I do hope you make the university a few bucks or I think its out the door baby!!....Can't have our University staff showing the University in a bad light....

You know, for a feminazi you have pretty nice breasts. Lovely in fact.
And I doubt if USC will care, despite the best efforts of some puritan detractor who no doubt phoned the media.
And to the person who complained about your breast photos;
Perhaps a penis enhancement might help with your dreadful insecurity issues. The images that offended you are known as breasts. Women have them. They are wonderful and do not necessarily contain silicone.

I was reading KNBC's website and came across the article describing your site. Of course, the article is in the typical form of sensationalism. I expected pornography and what I found was a very insightful blogger who has something to say. Of course USC will protect academic freedom. I'm always confused over how a woman's breasts are made out to be such a big deal in the prudist puritanical society.

I should have added....I never looked at the breasts pics.....I am a "brain" man, I care more about what you do and think than about your "tits"....besides, more than a mouthful is a waste....and I hope more women will read your blog and forget about getting implants.....

"USC has more problems with their football players raping"
Wow, what conviction? As a part of our many freedoms in America (like freedom of speech utilized here on this blog), we are innocent until proven guilty. How sad that you have prejudged these Americans, and deprived **them** of their rights.

So I have been reading the Cardinal Martini blog to see what he has to say and the fact that I have had an issue with his blog for about a year now. It only makes me more inspired to continue fighting. The writer and those who read it seem to think that clothing or lack there of equates with intelligence. I dare them to spend one day in your class because they are obviously too ignorant on feminism or a number of other social issues to accurately comment on them.

Hi Diana, I don't know what the big shit is all about. It is your own personal website, and if the University of South Central admins don't like it they can pound sand. Keep up the fun.

Hello! I just received a call from my mom after she saw NBC's preview of "a USC professor posing topless on a website." I asked, "Is it Diana Blaine?" and then went to check your website to find that, yes indeed, it was you! Why did I think of you? I guess it could've been because you're one of the few professors I know with a website, but also perhaps because of your powerful and free stance as a feminist!
Well, I was proud to call my mom back to say that it was you and you were my professor!!! Hope all is well.

You are clearly having way too much fun with this. Rock on, you lusty, dusty desert goddess!
Posted by: Slappy Lovenuts | May 8, 2006 09:40 PM
So glad to hear from you Slappy, given that you were not only there for, but a huge part of, my initial foray into simultanously owning both my spirituality and my physicality.
Basically, I have survived the mind/body split. Take that, Descartes!
Posted by: Diana | May 8, 2006 10:05 PM
My favorite part of the report was the "replete with a trio" of pictures... such obvious intelligence there. Diana, rock on, and don't stop what what you're doing!!
Posted by: Jillian | May 8, 2006 10:55 PM
Rock On, Diana! KNBC4 in LA has got to about the most "newsless" newscast around. Your site is great, and I sincerely hope that the stuffed shirts at USC are not talking out of both sides of their mouths with their "free speech" policy statement. It has been my unfortunate experience that "after the furor" dies down, the alumni/administrative conservatives do their worst. My fiance is a 46 year old breast cancer survivor who, thank God!, has addressed her "body loathing issues" post mastectomy and menopause. Now, how much easier would life be, if the American male could somehow mature past the stage of adolescent breast infatuation.
I hope the Channel 4 mention doesn't overload your site. If you start to have bandwidth issues, I would be happy to provide you some free storage/bandwidth on a temporary, "as-needed", basis. Just email me and make the request, and it is yours!
Supporting you all the way!

What sniveling little assholes these detractors are. So they weren't getting enough reaction here, so they have to report you to a higher "authority" in an effort to get Dr. Diana in trouble. *sniff, sniff, boo-hoo* And what does Dr. Diana say? Thanks for all the power gang! HAHAHA!

Too bad you didn't get to meet Colleen Williams. That bitch is fierce!

Doctor Blaine;
Perhaps your main detractor (the one looking for cheap publicity for his blog) would be happier at Bob Jones University or Jerry Falwell Tech. He reminds me of the sissy/weeenie fratboys from Animalhouse.
This is a good example of the disadvatages of homeschooling a child in rural Utah. They come to USC and never develop beyond the puritan morality-complex their overprotective mommies saddle them with during toliet training. I suggest years of intense therapy.
He apparently gets nervous at the sight of your breasts online. This may develop past the latency stage into a full-blown crush. I predict he'll soon be sending flowers and bad love poetry.
If you have inspired the adolescent wrath of this wannabe aristocrat from the morality police, you are clearly doing a fine job. Don't lose any sleep over it.
Posted by: Seaneen | May 9, 2006 07:37 AM
I'm shocked! Shocked, i tell you!
I had no idea women had breasts. How dare you open my eyes to different ways of thinking. What are you, a university professor or something?
Next you'll be expecting me to think. Sheesh!
Posted by: Bart | May 9, 2006 07:41 AM
I think it's funny that people think you've taken away the rights of football players who are still roaming the USC campus with more support than a push up bra.
"Odalisques were the virgin slaves of the harem, where they were at the bottom of the social ladder, serving not the sultan himself but rather his concubines and wives as personal chambermaids."
VIRGIN!!! (That CLEARLY can't be you. Why even try?)
I think this is all hilarious.

Diana, good for you girl! more power to ya! T

Dear Colleague:
Well Inside Higher Ed had your link up and as usual the immoral moralists gave you the Hypatia of Alexandria treatment. No surprise there. They share the same evil spirit as her attackers and are spurred on by the same kind of agitator!
So I did what everyone else did: I looked at your picture. Then I took a while to look at all 150 or so of them. Bless you. You have a life full of friends, love and excitement. Long after Horowitzs' books are pulped, the religious right splits and goes back to their sectarian loathing of each other, and the war for profit produces its final crop of scandals, you'll have your life, its meanings and all it signifies to those who love and respect you. And I'll still admire your courage and write in run on sentences.
All peace

"where I went specifically to confront and erase the body loathing that my culture foists on us women.:
I don't have any problem with your nudity. I have a problem with your lazy thinking. Women are beauty oriented because male sexuality is highly visual. Women adapted to seek men of status and power, and care most about tallness and symmetry. There are numerous studies (with good data), but many of them are mentioned in consumer books by David Buss (Evolution of Desire) and by Townsend in What Men Want/What Women Want. Buss' book is probably the best overview. Far too many women's studies girls are too invested in what they want to think. Take a biology class, lady. Men and women are different.

You said: "Tomorrow, Total World Domination!". Well, I think it is worldnews now. You're on a journal's website in Belgium. You go, dr. Diana and I hope you find your agent. http://standaard.typepad.com/en_nu_even_ernstig/2006/05/diana_blaine.html

You made the newspaper in Belgium (or at least, their online version). And by God, I think you make a great ambassador for your views, and your rejection of a few nasty elements in our culture. But then, if you weren't so beautiful, it could have backfired :-) What does that teach us ??

This should never have made the news. The US has much bigger fish to fry than a woman showing her breasts.
You have to be an alien to take issue at that. 500 000 years of evolution and some people still can't get over the fact that women have breasts. It's laughable.
In the mean time the national debt has never been higher, tens of millions of people don't have health insurance, women are still considered a nuissance by their employers because [excuse me] they give birth and there is a war going on the cost of which would have paid for the development of hydrogen as a universal power source.
What are some people offended by: breasts. Get out of mommie's basement and try the real world for a change!
It -has- to be my value system that's on the blink again. I get that a lot.

Hooters - don't hide them. Celebrate them.

Half a million years of evolution and some women still can't get over the fact that men like looking at naked women. Lust after them even.
Lust is good.
It sparks conversation.

Jorge,
Two hundred years ago no one had even heard of health insurance.
Where did it come from?
Not every one has it? Two hindred years ago no one had it.

What sniveling big assholes these proponents are.
(For the humor impaired and to maintain balance)
BTW it has been rumored that assholes are everywhere.

You are wonderful! We men can be such complete asses/idiots. I came in search for the breast but found a wonderful world of good people living good lives.... Awesome... Keep kicking butt

I think you are great. I have read everything that has said against you and I can't tell exactly what the scandal or big deal is, i.e., there is no scandal and nothing is going on. There is nothing coherent in the arguments against you. In fact, my only concern is that you are being quoted incorrectly on General Card Mart's page:
From: http://cardinalmartini.mu.nu/archives/175516.php
Then she says that we are acting like "intolerant little punk[s], mouthing off to elders, speaking up about things [we have] no knowledge of, being insolent to [our] teachers."
I may have misunderstood your post on your page, but here is what I got from your quote:
"I [DR. BLAINE] was an intolerant little punk, mouthing off to elders, speaking up about things I [DR. BLAINE] had no knowledge of, being insolent to my teachers."
The arguments are so baseless, that I feel a bit absurd giving my support -- it just gives credence to a baseless argument to begin with.
This will be my last comment on it: I think you do great work and I wish you the best!
I will continue to read, but hopefully this slander will end soon and we can get back to our regularly scheduled program.

As a Midwest, conservative, white male Republican I have to admit that I just don't get it. I can't for the life of me see what's wrong with any of the pictures Dr. Blaine posted. Seriously, someone's going to have to tell me what the big deal is, 'cause I can't figure it out.
Well, I guess this just proves that Moonbats aren't unique to the Left.
