I Am Ready for My Close-Up Mr DeMille
Yesterday my father's doctor and I were discussing dad's imminent death from kidney failure. We spoke of the need for acceptance and letting go; we spoke of the need to span from bodies and pus to grace and light. We held one another and shared our experiences and cried. Then she got out a pad and prescribed me John Milton's Paradise Lost.
Needless to say it wasn't your usual doctor visit. Then again in case you can't tell I don't exactly live your usual life.
She told me she was impressed with my depth and my humanity and my intellect. She also told me that I was beautiful. I told her that I had learned through hard spiritual work to own these gifts of mine, that humility includes both acknowledging strengths as well as weaknesses. Anything less would be to spit in the face of the magical powers that made us.
Coincidentally (?), my husband, an English Renaissance scholar, had been speaking to me of these exact issues the night before and had brought up Milton as well. Wow. Don't have to tell me thrice. It's clearly time to get out that anthology I tore through in college in order to pass the tests and actually listen and learn with humility and gratitude from that seventeenth-century Christian visionary.
Anyway, as we were wrapping up our visit, she took one last note of my hard-earned ability to accept with dignity myself as I am, good and bad, and she said, "you're ready to stand naked before the world." I echoed these words, laughing and agreeing in amazement that a physician was making such a pronouncement about me and that it seemed so apt and timely.
Of course I thought we were speaking metaphorically.....
Several hours later, there I was on the news, naked before the world indeed. And unsurprisingly I felt no shame whatsoever. I've nothing to hide, and in fact look forward to the chance to foster informed discussion about women's bodies so that we may gift to the next generation a true sense of self-love, not one based on being polished and blasted, starved and shellacked, trussed up, and sliced up, and dyed.
So look for me today on the Channel 4 news at 5. They just left after interviewing me about who I am, why I am, what I am. I could answer with pride when Cary Berglund (shout out, hey Cary! Let's party!) asked me if I did not think there should be a code of conduct for professors. Of course we need to behave ethically, I said. I do not drink, smoke or take drugs. I do not have sex with students. I don't cheat, lie or steal. I do pass on to searching young women and men the permission to think for themselves, and value the right to free speech my ancestors fought and died for that gives me this ability.
The thought police have lost again. Somewhere Orwell must be smiling.

I think what the news did to you is terrible. What you do on your personal time is your business, not the worlds. One of my brothers speaks very highly of you, he had you for a class, I can't recall which, but him and his buddies all agreed that you're a class A lady. Just reading through your blog is enough to show just how much of an free spirit you really are, and the school should embrace that, I'm sure most of your students don't have an issue with it. Besides, it's nothing they can't see in a magazine or in a movie theater, not to mention you are quite a cutie.

Thank you for not backing down in the face of the thought/morality police.

I fear that you are the latest fish caught in the Moral Panic net that has been trawling University waters for several years now. My mother, who teaches Anthropology and Womens Studies, regularly receives evaluations that declare her "too liberal." I bet this will be good for your career in the long run. (After all the aggravation, it had better be.) But the good part is that now I know about your blog, and I will keep reading.
(And Hi, Arianna! I recognize you from IW!)

Oh, and the really important thing that I somehow forgot to say: I'm terribly sorry to hear that your father is doing poorly. Best of luck to you.
Posted by: uccellina | May 9, 2006 04:07 PM
I too am sorry about your father. Perhaps he'd enjoy the Milton?
I hope you won't take this for anything but my admiration and concern: These guys were rubes. Easy pickings. Laughable. It won't always be so.
And, I'm still horrified at the lack of professionalism in your journalism community, but I'm hoping you'll provide a link so I can see you raise the level.
I'll be visiting you again, often.

Dear Diana,
I'm so glad to read that you have such a healthy, serene response to the efforts of some folks to cause you distress. I'm so sorry that this should be distracting you from your time with your family now. I'll be back to read your blog because I find your thinking and writing smart, courageous, strong, and compassionate. You have your priorities straight, even if some others don't.

I was amused by the recent experience you had with the morality police. I can think of a movie name, "The Taliban Wore Business Suits".

Imran -
We don't care about morality and we never have! There are legitimate complaints against Blaine and if you wish to honestly understand those complaints and not blindly criticize others, you'd read what other individuals are saying. Take a look: http://cardinalmartini.mu.nu
Posted by: Chairman of the Board | May 9, 2006 05:56 PM
Chairman;
I read your (and others) posts at cardinalmartini. Even conservatives are disgusted with your bullyboy tactics. Your "legitimate complaints" amount to nothing more than a disagreement with Dr Blaines viewpoint and for that you and your hitmen have attacked her personally. You should be ashamed. One day you may look back on this with embarassment. That would be the beginnings of maturity.
Dr Blaine;
Nemome Impune Lacesset!
That extends to those I hold dear.

Chairman of the Board writes "We don't care about morality and never have!"
A prima facie truth if ever I saw one.
Posted by: Goethe | May 9, 2006 06:23 PM
This issue is regardless of political ideology. Accusations are neither liberal nor conservative.
Blaine holds every male responsible for the action of rape! That's confusion between omission and commission. It's a far stretch to say that the ultimate drop of two rape charges against football players means that every USC male is complicit in the act of rape. That's a moral charge against half of the student population of USC. As long as you understand that issue and its lack of logic, then I'm happy. It's not a disagreement - it's a sociologically based, generalized accusation against all men. She took the initiative and wrote that public opinion and we’re calling her on it. We still have not heard a reply. That's not a personal attack.

"We don't care about morality and we never have".
There we have it folks. In writing.
Wha...You don't like this kind of journalism?
Posted by: Pony | May 9, 2006 06:47 PM
Yes, Orwell is smiling! I look forward to reading your blogs (after finals next week - groan) and I need to pick up Paradise Lost to add to my summer reading.
As a full-figured, ample breasted, always hungry for knowledge, 21st Century with some old fashioned touches type of woman I look forward to your book and future posts.
As for your enemies they wish they had an 1/8 of what makes you, you! Never let'em see you sweat!!!!
Posted by: Nicole | May 9, 2006 07:53 PM
So, if it were true that this is not a personal attack, then why change the dialog of the disagreement and then go to the news about it like a spoiled 3 year old.
The essence of your disagreement is that you claim she calls all men rapists.
Instead of going to the news with that, you go and say... our bad professor has nudie pics.
Im sorry but that pretty much demonstrates how personal your willing to make it and puts you on shaky moral ground. Very shaky moral ground in fact.
Dr. Blaine, Im glad your standing up to these children. A human being should never have to be ashamed of their own body. Anyone who says otherwise is as bad as the Taliban.

Wow- you certainly have a power greater than yourself alive in your life! There is nothing to fear. Like I always say...
*Hating me won't make you pretty.*

First, as a woman whose parents have already died, I am sorry to hear about your father. I am amazed that his doctor is talking to you about your body as you dad lies dying. Incredible... Regarding the blog and your photos. I visited your website long before this latest publicity because my daughter was taking one of your classes. I wanted to see where my hard-earned money went; I frequently visit professors' sites at my daughter's recommendations. I was amazed that you seem so obsessed by "boobs." Yours in your Halloween costume (picture of which was there prior to channel 4 inquiry) and now has disappeared; pictures or your friend taking photos of yours...etc. I have tried to raise both my daughter and son to love their whole person. Minds and bodies. What happened to you? Did you never find a way to accept your body enough to have to display it at Burning Tree. I now have googled your name and found that student's blog. You are demonizing him. I got the impression that his major critisism is not with the photos, but with your assertion that all men are rapists. You've got to be kidding! Some are. Most are not and would defend a woman with all their might. Too bad you haven't met any of those.

Nobody went to the news to report on the topless photos. The news came across Cardinal Martini.
If USC students had gone to the news in the first place, we would have laid out all our issues with Professor Blaine which are:
1) She accused all USC males of being responsible for rape.
2) She assesed that a football player was guilty of rape despite being acquitted of charges.
3) She accused those who differ with her brand of feminism as being "pro-sexism" and "pro-rape."
4) She has stated that her courses are forums of political advocacy.
5) She refuses to defend her beliefs to those who haven't "studied what she's studied" but then labels the periodic table of elements as a tool of male domination.
6) She also posted nude photographs of herself on this site, which was designed specifically for her students, thus representing the university.
Dr. Blaine has not answered or explained any of these bizarre assertions.
You can see her statements and accusations at Cardinal Martini:

Why is no one arguing the issue? Dr. Diana's statement does not say that every man is a rapist, it says that every man should discourage rape and that men are the ones in the position to do so. What is wrong with this idea? It is the same as saying that Germans who did/said nothing had "some" responsibility for the holocaust or that Americans who saw yet did/said nothing against slavery had "some" responsibility for its existence. Instead of attacking a woman who is merely trying to get men to stop each other from attacking women, maybe you should be supporting her and her ideas and trying to make a better world for your future daughters and wives.
Just to be fair, I'll post this on both websites.

So let me get this straight...
It's OK for me to stare at your boobs on the internet, but if I were to stare at, say, Pamela Anderson's boobs on the internet, I'd be contributing to the objectification of women.
You teach feminism? I'm more confused than ever.

Do me a favor, folks. Read "Politics and the English Language" and then read this blog, and *then* tell me whether you think Orwell is smiling right now.
By the way, Orwell didn't like pacifists.
